Discord Yohji Yamamoto, the luxury accessories brand led by its namesake designer, collaborated with three Japanese artists for its latest capsule collection. The collection is on display on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku department store until Sept 22.

Discord is known for its black and white designs symbolic of Yohji Yamamoto, but for its team-up with illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, photographer Hiroyuki Arakawa and painter Yuuka Asakura, the brand presented designs in blue, purple and other eye-catching colors.

The main window display of the events space is also decorated with Amano’s illustrations. For the display, Amano created a new series of monochrome artworks to go with the brand image. These artworks also appear in the form of black and blue leather items that comprise the capsule collection. Each item is embossed with prints of Amano’s illustrations and then carefully hand painted with beautiful colors. The collaboration between Discord and Amano presents a collection of business bags that brilliantly fuses elegance with art. All items from the brand introducing Amano’s works are inscribed with the signature “2015 Amano”.

As for the continuing collaboration with Arakawa, Discord presents a lineup of items designed under the theme “translucent”. The 2015-16 A/W is full of colors and flowers including lilies, which were taken using X-rays. Up until now, only white flowers were introduced, but for the capsule collection, Discord has selected images of flowers with colors. Bright-colored blue flowers make an impression on delicate stoles while leather bags are hand painted with the images of flowers. Each bag is slightly different from the others and brings out the flavor of the craftsman who drew the image.

Asakura painted works focusing on the beauty of flowers and the female body. She referred to her past collections for ideas and created a collection of black leather items decorated with acrylic paint, which were applied by hand, making each item unique. The color palette includes red, orange, yellow and other bright colors. Yohji Yamamoto often works with young artists, and Asakura is one of the many talents discovered by Yamamoto. Her paintings were also introduced in Yamamoto’s 2016 S/S collection for men.

The main window display showcases collaboration items with Amano as well as the sketches prepared by the artist for the project. For Isetan, this is a part of the “This is Japan” campaign, which introduces the best of what the country has to offer.
